On December 10, 2024, the Graduate Institute of International Security (GIIS, INDAC, ROC NDU), invited two esteemed Japanese scholars, Lt. General (Ret.) Junichi Araki and Dr. Satoru Nagao, to share their perspectives on Japan’s policy and the impact of Donald Trump’s Second Presidency to the Indo-Pacific. Junichi Araki, a former commander of the Japan Air Training Command in the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) and a political advisor of the Japan Forum For Strategic Studies, discussed the JASDF’s responses to threats from China and North Korea. He provided detailed observations with the aid of diagrams, highlighting the positive developments in the “Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).” On the other hand, Dr. Nagao, a fellow (nonresident) at Hudson Institute, provided his perspective on Trump’s potential policies, delivering an engaging and active presentation filled with expressive gestures and dialogue. Both scholars offered the audience valuable insights into Japan, East Asia, and its geopolitical dynamics, as well as global trends, during a vibrant Q&A session.
